XAMPP is a Web server package, which consists of Apache, PHP, and MySQL. Conventionally, to build an Apache web server we need to install three applications, namely Apache, PHP, and MySQL separately. With the help of XAMPP, we can easily install Apache, PHP, MySQL and some other additional applications with a single process.
XAMPP is a development of the LAMP (Linux Apache, MySQL, PHP, and PERL). And a non-profit project is developed by Apache Friends, founded by Kai 'Oswalad' Seidler and Kay Vogelgesang in 2002, their project aims to promote the use of Apache web server.
With XAMPP, you can build and try website on your computer first the same way as a professional programmer, without having to connect to the Internet. You can use a free CMS like WordPress, Joomla, or Drupal and run it on your computer with the help of XAMPP. So you can save the cost of the internet and have plenty of time to create a website.
Apache web server will run on port 80, and can't be in use simultaneously premises other web servers that use the same port. To make sure that the IIS web server on windows is not active when you use Apache, or you can change the port of IIS or another web server if you want to run in conjunction with Apache.
XAMPP is available for Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, and Solaris.
